Rainer Münz is Head of Research, Erste Bank, and Chair of KNOMAD Thematic Working Group 8 on Demographic Changes and Migration. He holds a PhD, from Vienna University (1978) and joined the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 1979, where he was Director, Institute of Demography until 1992. From 1992-2003, he served as the Head of the Department of Demography, Humboldt University, Berlin. He was also a visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley (1986, 1989, 1997-98), University of Bamberg (1986), University of Frankfurt (1988), University of Klagenfurt (1996, 1998), University of Vienna (2001-02), and the University of Zurich (1992). From 2001-02, he was Senior Research Fellow, Department of Mathematics of Finance, Technical University, Vienna. He has worked as consultant for the European Commission, OECD and the World Bank, as well as serving as an Adviser to the Greek (2003), Dutch (2004) and Slovene (2008) EU Presidencies. He was a member of the German Commission on Immigration Reform (2000-2001), and of the Reflection Group Horizon 2020-2030, European Union (2008-2010). He is currently a Non-Resident Senior Fellow, Hamburg Institute of International Economics, a Non-Resident Scholar at Bruegel (European think-tank based in Brussels), and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Migration Policy Institute of Washington DC. He continues to teach at the University of St Gallen.
