Rusmir hails from Bosnia and Herzegovina, which he left at age 17—as a war refugee—for the United States. He received his BA in Chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross and his MA in Humanities and Social Thought from New York University. After working in the education sector, he received an MBA from Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, where he was Salutatorian of his class.
