Dr Sergio Carmona is the director of the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital NHLS virology lab, one of the largest virology laboratory in South Africa. He has been involved in implementing HIV molecular diagnostic platforms nationally and overseeing laboratory services such as HIV viral load and drug resistance testing. He also has a wider interest in HIV-related public health matters and has conducted research to support this, such as a national sentinel site HIV drug resistance survey (in 2013-14) and ongoing work on the monitoring and evaluation of the comprehensive care, management and treatment HIV program in South Africa. He is a senior lecturer at the School of Pathology of the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School and previously served on the Executive Committee of the National Health Laboratory Service.
