Shan Aman-Rana is a PhD Economics candidate at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She is a development economist with a special interest in organizational economics of the state. Her research aims to investigate incentives, selection and monitoring of bureaucrats and their relationship with the politicians and voters. She is also interested in social economics. In most of her research there has been an overlap between organizational and social economics.
She is affiliated with STICERD, Economic Organisation and Public Policy Programme (EOPP), International Growth Centre (IGC) and Bissau Economics Lab (BELAB). Shan has taught at the Department of Economics, London School of Economics and Political Science as well as the University of Cambridge. She was awarded Best Teaching Fellow Award in the Economics Tripos, University of Cambridge and LSE Best Class Teacher Award. She was also nominated for LSE Students’ Union Student-led Most Inspirational Teacher Award.
Shan is a Pakistan Administrative Services civil servant and is on leave from her job to pursue the PhD at LSE. Shan has extensive experience working as a civil servant in Pakistan. She has worked as Deputy Secretary, Services and General Administration Department, where she has been involved in dealing with complaints of the citizens against the political establishment, establishment matters of judges, doctors and teachers. She has also worked as an Assistant Commissioner in the administration of district Sheikhupura, where she was involved in Agricultural Income Tax collection among other things. As a District Monitoring Officer (Education), Punjab Education Sector Reform Programme, Department of School Education, she was involved in monitoring schools across Punjab and supervising Monitoring and Evaluation Assistants (MEAs), who were responsible for regular field visits and data collection.
