Ms. Chukwuma is the Division Head for the Healthcare Associated Infection and Patient Safety at the EpiData Center Department, Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center. She has worked in the field of public health and epidemiology for 16 years and has focused on infectious disease and clinical epidemiology for the last 10 years. Her work is centered on developing innovative capabilities for real time surveillance of infectious diseases and integrative approaches to translate surveillance into actionable information to advance force readiness and health protection.
Her infectious disease surveillance efforts focus on infectious pathogens with implications for antimicrobial resistance. She implemented the Navy’s antimicrobial resistance surveillance system, which is leveraged by the department of defense (DoD) Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring and Research program for comprehensive surveillance enterprise wide. As an integral member of the DoD antimicrobial stewardship working group, she contributed to the development and implementation of antimicrobial stewardship program at military treatment facilities within the military health system. She leads the DoD effort to implement the national healthcare safety network (NHSN) antimicrobial resistance (AR) module across the enterprise in support of the DoD Combat Antimicrobial Resistant Bacterial initiative. Ms. Chukwuma received her master’s in public health in Epidemiology from Eastern Virginia Medical School (2002), with additional training on program evaluation.
