Dr. Yan Bai leads the global monitoring of the Cost and Affordability of a Healthy Diet (CoAHD) at the World Bank’s Development Data Group and contributes analytical work for the World Bank’s International Debt Report (IDR), providing cross-country analysis on external debt and its implications for development.

His research spans nutrition security, international economics, and sustainable development, examining how food environments, global markets, and economic conditions shape development outcomes. His work has been published in leading journals including Nature Climate Change, Nature Food, Lancet Planetary Health, and Food Policy etc.

Dr. Bai holds a Ph.D. in Nutrition Policy from Tufts University’s Friedman School and a master’s degree in international economics and finance from Tufts University’s Fletcher School. Before graduate studies, he worked as an investment analyst in global financial institutions, including IFC and the Rothschild Group. He also holds dual bachelor’s degrees in economics and chemistry from Peking University in China.
