Yohannes is a civil engineer with over 18 years of international experience in both professional practice and research. His experience spans climate and disaster risk management, transportation systems engineering, urban development, housing reconstruction, infrastructure systems, risk modeling, property insurance, and construction management.
Currently based in Singapore, Yohannes leads and advises on infrastructure projects across Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. His previous work has supported projects and initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and South Asia, focusing on strengthening infrastructure resilience and supporting sustainable urban growth.
Before joining the World Bank, Yohannes held roles in the private and public sectors, and in academia—as a catastrophe risk modeler, structural engineer, and part-time lecturer. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Infrastructure Systems from Cornell University, where his research focused on enhancing infrastructure resilience and leveraging insurance mechanisms to manage climate and disaster-related risks.
