Maereg joined Women, Business and the Law in 2016. She analyzes legislation worldwide, for several topics. Her prior experience includes overseeing free legal aid centers that are established to serve the poor, women, children and other vulnerable groups in Ethiopia. She also has an experience working as a Judge and Assistant Judge. Previously, she worked for the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and Addis Ababa First Instance Courts in Ethiopia. Maereg is the author of a scholarly article titled Leveling the Playing Field: Advancing Free Legal Aid for the Family Law Claims of Ethiopian Women, published in William & Marry Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice. She received her LLB from Unity University in Ethiopia and holds an LLM in International Legal Studies with Human Rights certificate from Georgetown University and an MA in Peace and Security studies from Addis Ababa University. She is the recipient of Women's Law & Public Policy Fellowship Program (WLPPFP) at the Georgetown University Law Center.
