Here are 10 ways to fight corruption

|

This page in:

1. Corruption is not only about bribes: People especially the poor get hurt when resources are wasted. That’s why it is so important to understand the different kinds of corruption to develop smart responses.

2. Power of the people: Create pathways that give citizens relevant tools to engage and participate in their governments – identify priorities,  problems and find solutions.

3. Cut the red tape: Bring together formal and informal processes (this means working with the government as well as  non-governmental groups) to change behavior and monitor progress.

4. It’s not 1999: Use the power of technology to build dynamic and continuous exchanges between key stakeholders: government, citizens, business, civil society groups, media, academia etc.

5. Deliver the goods: Invest in institutions and policy – sustainable improvement in how a government delivers services is only possible if the people in these institutions endorse sensible rules and practices that allow for change while making the best use of tested traditions and legacies – imported models often do not work.

6. Get incentives right: Align anti-corruption measures with market, behavioral, and social forces. Adopting integrity standards is a smart business decision, especially for companies interested in doing business with the World Bank Group and other development partners.

7. Sanctions matter: Punishing corruption is a vital component of any effective anti-corruption effort.

8. Act globally and locally: Keep citizens engaged on corruption at local, national, international and global levels – in line with the scale and scope of corruption. Make use of the architecture that has been developed and the platforms that exist for engagement.

9. Build capacity for those who need it most: Countries that  suffer from chronic fragility, conflict and violence– are often the ones that have the fewest internal resources to combat corruption. Identify ways to leverage international resources to support and sustain good governance.

10. Learn by doing: Any good  strategy must be continually monitored  and evaluated to make sure it can be easily adapted as  situations on the ground change.

1- Bring more transparency by making RTI Laws stronger and stronger.
2- Most of corruption is involved in misuse of public funds particularly in procurement. Despite introducing PPRA Rules, still most of the procurement in public bodies involve kickbacks, over pricing and commissions as the weak monitoring system facilitates the officers/officials to grab money from within the system. We can overcome it by devising and implementing an effective monitoring system that may check the whole process of tendering, award and purchasing. The governments should itself make a system to fix the maximum purchasing price of all major items available in market and compel the offices to not cross that upper limit of prices.
3- An anti corruption helpline must be introduced by all donor organisations such as USAID has introduced. I have observed that most of the loans and grants ultimately bring invisible change/improvement in target areas due to weak monitoring and prevailing corruption. The end consumer i.e. common citizen remains non or less benefited from huge donations/loans or grants given to the governments by the world development organizations. I had got an opportunity to watch a World Bank funded project amounting Rs. 15.00+ Billion targetted to bring improvment in WASAs of five large cities of Punjab (Pakistan) but after 4-5 years, WASAs have no significant improvements in terms of service delivery. Still the drainage system is choked and people of five cities are still drinking unhygienic water similarly as it was done five years back. So what common citizen obtained from Rs. 15 Billion loan which he/she has to return? What role WB played to ensure improvement in service delivery of WASAs for which it approved and spent a huge loan between 2013-2017?
So, to fight corruption effectively, both donors and receivers will have to play their role and either it is loan or grant, model of USAID should be adopted.

It is important to deal with corruption not with the things we are talking about now. Come to think of what things we think we can use to fight corruption. It is not education which is producing undetectable pen robberies. It is not the law. The countries have all the laws. It is not the procedures. The procedures are already in existence. It is not the organisations or institutions. We can have all the laws. We can have all the procedures. We can have all the logistic and equipment. Let us know also that those who are committing corruption and those who are benefiting from corruption cannot fight corruption
The problem in the fight against corruption every where is the mind of the people. Where ever there is corruption a new mindset is needed to fight it. The new mindset must be able to see it as a wrong against society. A new mindset must be able to stopcommitting it. A new mind must stop benefiting, condoning or facilitating corruption in all its forms. The new mind must be able to enforce the laws on corruption right from investigation, prosecution and adjudication. The new mind must be able to apply sanctions vigorously as to make corruption a very high risk activity with no means of profit. A new mindset should in fact make corruption highly unattractive with dire consequences. Until a society reaches a state of a new mind all it will be doing is to be reacting in various ways to corruption. That, certainly will be the norm until a new mindset arrives. How can a very corrupt society reach a state of new mind? Certainly not through condemnations, passing new laws or establishing new bureaucracies. After having all the laws we shall say if we have this other law then we can be able then to deal with corruption and it goes for all the arrangements we have now. When the society is inherently corrupt, existing laws must be enforced to deter prospective criminals from engaging, and old criminals from re-engaging in crime. Without deterrence, there is no war and there is no fight. There will be only slogans, lip service, news headlines and all those things which go to deceive the victims(society) that something is being done. The coalitions must be against palliatives and cosmetics and wage a war for deterrence to take effect in developing countries. With my law enforcement background I stand for deterrence which leads to a new mind and I am ready to offer my expertise at any time it is required.

i am currently working on a paper five+two rules to fight corruption, these includes;
1. Resist while fighting corruption
2. Put yourself in situation of victim of corruption
3. Establish Networks to fight Corruption
4. Compare your fight with the results of yesterday not with other countries
5. Set your self with perfect order before you criticizes others
6. Fight corruption or at least do not be corrupt
7. Educate your self and others through critical thinking
Each of these rules have clear definitions and sub topics.
Kind Regards,

I can speak about my country south Africa because I dont have experiance in other countries.

We need to pay government officials the President ,and people working in the government sector good salaries and incentives. These salaries and incentives should be linked to the income the country generates

Even if this amounts to x%
of money generated by all types of government revenue.

We cannot expect our government and its people to be working for the good of the population and country if we do not compensate them well.Government should be incentivised and compensated for policies they create which create employment and wealth, for the country and its people.Goverment and people working in all sectors of government, should be incentivised to bring down crime and improve the country and its economically and financially.

I once met a policeman who told me when they first joined the police force they used to run after criminals, but they soon realised there was no gain in this, they realised they should rather sit and do minimal work and collect their salaries

There should be no need for government or people working in government to take bribes,There should be more incentive for them to work hard and do their jobs to the best of their ability.

Capitalism ,is competitive and we need the best minds and best people to run our country.

Government official or presidents live a life which is under threath, from prison sentence to asasination. How is it that there is more incentive for a person to run a private company than to be a government official or president etc.

If we do not step up our game, when it comes to changing policies so government officials and presidents etc , be paid ,incentive linked salaries, we will continue to get rogue officials and presidents.

When we implement workers participation in management schemes in all the organization it will automatically reduce corruption and when we give well education to all the people (upto degree level) it will reduce the corruption. If we give Mbbs seat and big posts according test of psychology ( for example we evaluate the entrance test of doctors according to the behavior as such as patience . Sympathy. Dedication ) dedicated people is only fit for doctors and high level posts not for wisdom and academic skill

Thanks for this 10 ways to fight corruption. Many people don't like to enjoy reading mostly the African countries, for me I think there must be the support to public show's that may include; Drama, music's, and theaters containing the message that people will now about corruption.
Secondly in every country they may sent a group of people who control the local government in public services and ensure if they have all required documents to work there, in this way I want to say to see if they have passed the exam before starting jobs because it is onseved that some people pass working examination and miss there possition.
Thirdly, for the first way you've said above the government must sett a group of secrets people who control the financial services for countly workers especially in the Cabinet.
As conclusion corruption can be erradicated if we work together and if all government endorse a group of people who fight against corruption.

Corruption is not something we buy, it's inborn feeling. when we talk about corruption he/she should start asking questions, am I corrupt? my wife corrupt? and my family at large corrupt? if we are really serious combating corruption, start from yourself the move to clan, then from clan to local level, from local to national level up to global level. the worse corruption is from the local level and should be looked at from the grass roots. you cannot start climbing a tree from the branches, start from down guys.

You can also fight to curb corruption by being a role model for instance in private companies and business, indicate some rules and regulations, that should be followed by every employee in the compoundo

Everything will be said but I think the major cause of corruption is letting governments think for the citizens and if we fight this and citizens start thinking for their governments, corruption will be no more. The best examples are some African countries with governments pretending to work for people yet public funds are robbed. I've had of a country that bought the most expensive cows on the planet each cow costing more than 2US$. The most expensive roads are constructed with intentions of robbing public funds.
If governments start working on the orders of people, corruption will be no more...

I have experienced corruption in Europe (occasionally), and in my home, South Africa (systematic and with impunity).
SA needs a strong leader and the political will to address corruption. Key changes needed are:
Transparency: publish Tender info, winners, amounts, terms, other bids.
Independent Governance: ( not internal investigations)
Real Punishment: Huge fines, sackings and prison for offenders will create effective deterrent.
Many heads must roll before behavior change will develop.

Curruption is just one of the many problems in politics, yet it exstends into all branches of government. Most curruption happens during the time of a voting. One member is trying to sabataoge the other opponets efforts and oppinions. Now one way I would go about fighting curroption in my city is through background research, and involve the people. The people need to be included in order for this to work. Allow for many opinions and voices to be heard as a whole.

Government is most affected by greed and corruption. How to regulate prevent it. Choose wisely the people who enforce regulations that prevent greed and corruption. Those people must be ones who believe that their job is to help the society. They must be paid well, and they must be people who want to make the society good. They should be open to criticism from the people, and they must listen, because it is the people who have the information about corruption and greed.
