Central America is experiencing significant levels of socioeconomic vulnerability, where the occurrence of natural hazards is frequently translated into disasters . Today, it is the second-fastest urbanizing region in the world and one of the most vulnerable to climate risks.
In this context, we know that human and economic loss affects the sustainability and growth of countries. However, Central America has also great development opportunities that aim at strengthening resilience by managing its current risks , avoid creating new risks and establishing efficient response mechanisms to disasters through regional cooperation.
The World Bank, in collaboration with the Central American Integration System (SICA) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), has published a report about Disaster Risk Management in Central America that includes opportunities and challenges to strengthen its resilience.
The publication ‘Towards a More Resilient Central America,’ focuses on subjects such as governance, social inclusion, financing, and climate change adaptation, among others . In this video, I explain some of the key areas to develop resilience in the region.
