Christian Bodewig is Practice Manager for Social Protection and Jobs in West and Central Africa, where he leads a team providing lending, analytical and advisory services on social protection and labor policies.
Prior to this assignment, he was Lead Economist and Program Manager for the Sahel Adaptive Social Protection Program (SASPP), which supports programs and policies to help poor and vulnerable households in the Sahel adapt to the impacts of climate change. Previously, he was Program Leader for Southern Europe, overseeing the Bank's operational, analytical, and advisory programs in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, and Portugal. Between 2013 and 2018, he was Program Leader for Inclusive Growth in the European Union, coordinating World Bank lending and advisory projects in education, health, poverty, social protection, and labor in EU member states. Between 2009 and 2013, he coordinated the World Bank's Human Development Program in Vietnam. He began his career at the World Bank working on operational and analytical projects in education and social protection in Southeast Europe.
Prior to joining the Bank, he was one of the founders of the German “Schüler Helfen Leben” initiative to promote learning opportunities for youth in Southeast Europe.
Christian holds degrees in economics and political economy from the University College London and the London School of Economics.
