Creating markets, leaders and impact

Capital markets are key to transforming society. Since our inaugural bond over 70 years ago, the World Bank Treasury has pioneered many firsts. Our goal is to raise funds at the most reasonable cost for our client countries and to develop innovative solutions for the world's most difficult development challenges. Our history shows that when used innovatively and effectively, capital markets are a powerful force for good. The World Bank Treasury has been a large and significant player in the international financial markets for more than 70 years and has achieved a global reputation as a prudent and innovative borrower, investor, and risk manager.

A day in the life of the World Bank Treasury

The World Bank Treasury is organized into three departments and a risk and controls team. Over 200 staff work in Chennai, India; Sofia, Bulgaria; Tokyo; and Washington, D.C. We are pleased to introduce a few staff from our departments, who come from different regions and have distinct perspectives on what it’s like to work with us and across the World Bank.

Powered by a diverse and dedicated staff, the Treasury manages the institution's finances to enable all World Bank operations and lending.  We are a trusted advisor to our developing member countries, helping them build financial stability and resilience.  And we lead financial innovation to help them mobilize finance on a larger scale than ever before. Each year, we issue over $50 billion in bonds, prudently manage over $180 billion in assets, and process over $7 trillion in transactions.

Poverty has no borders: neither does excellence

With our 200-plus employees, the World Bank Treasury represents over 50 nationalities, and our leadership team hails from all regions of the world. We are proud to be an equal opportunity and an inclusive employer. We have a dedicated and committed workforce and do not discriminate based on gender, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
